Vern & Alma Haik's Spring Creek Lodge
The
Spring Creek Lodge was a popular eatery from 1949 through 1974
Legendary
up and down the Palmer Highway from 1949 through 1962, when Alma and her
husband, Vern, owned the lodge. Strategically located at Mile 20 of what is now
known as the Old Glenn Highway
Vern
Haik worked as a surveyor at Fort Richardson
Eager
to leave the city, Haik followed the lead of another surveyor on Fort Richardson
named Paul Swanson. Swanson and his wife, Margaret, had begun to homestead at
Mile 19 of the Palmer Highway

Lodge opened for business on Memorial Day, May 30, 1949, with no electricity,
Haik said.
